僕が2019年にアイルランドをヒッチハイクで一周した時に出会ったアイリッシュティーも締めの一杯に是非。

アイルランド、ウエスト空港・ノックからロンドンヒースローへ。

残りの休暇を日本で過ごす予定のため、これから2日間は空港近くのホテルにこもってひたすら日本時間で調整。(初めての試みです。現在夜中1時、日本時間で午前10時、なんとか起きました)

今回の旅はいつもより少し短め。目的は、この4年間で鈍った旅の勘を取り戻す事、長らく会えなかった友人に会いに行く事、そして第二の故郷、大切なPUBが無くなった街の変化を感じる事。

すっかり変わってしまった事も、変わらず受け入れてくれたものも実際にこの目で確認できたので、来れて本当に良かったです。

最後に、件の街で新たに開拓したPUBのローズさんっていうオーナー(5代目って言ってたかな？)に言われた事が模範解答みたいだったので。

「遠くに旅すれば旅するほど、日頃の自分の暮らし・環境とか周りの人達に感謝の気持ちを持つようになるでしょ？それって素敵なことよ」

毎日長々と書いちゃったけれど、お付き合い頂き、ありがとうございました。

また元気に弘前でみんなにお会いできるのを楽しみにしています。

Day 8.

Traveling from West Airport Knock in Ireland to London Heathrow.

Since I’m planning to spend the rest of my vacation in Japan, I’ll be staying in a hotel near the airport for the next two days, just adjusting to Japanese time.

This trip is not as long as usual.

The purpose is to regain my travel instincts that have dulled over the past four years, to visit friends I haven’t seen for a long time, and to experience the changes in the town that has lost my precious PUB.

I am very glad that I was able to see with my own eyes the things that have completely changed and the things that have never been changed.

Lastly, I was given some good answers about this journey by the owner of another pub in town.

-The more you travel, the more you appreciate your life, surroundings, and those around you.-

It’s a wonderful thing.

I write a lot each day, but I appreciate your patience.

I am excited to see all of you again in Hirosaki.

宿泊先は1階がPUB、2階がアコモデーションになっていて、起きたら下のPUBに行き朝食を頂くシステムになってる。

昨夜の宿泊客は自分だけだったらしく、一階PUBで寝酒を頂いた時に、朝食の時間を確認されたんだけど、今朝約束の時間に降りて行ったら電気すらついてなかった　笑

アイリッシュのこんなところも好きなんです。

この街の最終日。

早い時間にはまた車を走らせて、この辺の美しい大自然を眺めに。何度来ても素晴らしいし飽きない。

そして街の情報収集に適した場所はもちろんPUB。

大好きなあの場所はもうないけれど、今日は昼からギネスで乾杯。この国のPUBは365日休み無しで昼から開いてて、夜の顔とはまた違ったりする。

滞在した3日間で、街にある全てのPUBを回った。(コロナ禍で3軒も閉店したんだって)

新たに色んな人と出会って、会話をして、件のPUBオーナー家族が皆元気なこともわかったし、馴染み深い顔にも会えたし、少し寂しいのに変わりはないけれど、来て良かったな。

やっぱり最終的には「人」なんだと思う。

会いたい人が集まっていたのがそのPUBだったとしても、みんなが元気ならまたどこかで会えるし、それだけでまた訪れる理由になる。

それさえわかれば自分達がこれから何をするか、どうするか？

それがわかっただけで、良い旅だったなって思います。

Day 7.

The place I’m staying has a pub on the first floor and accommodations on the second floor. The system is to go to the pub downstairs for breakfast when you wake up.

The only person staying at the hotel last night was me, and while I was having a nightcap at the PUB on the first floor, I was asked about breakfast time.

When I went downstairs for breakfast the next morning, the kitchen was completely dark.

This type of thing about Irish is something I love.

This is my final day in this town.

I drove a car in the early hours to explore the beautiful wilderness around here.

Regardless of the number of times I come here, it’s still wonderful and I never get tired of it.

And the best place to gather information about the town is, of course, the pub.

My favorite place is gone, but I toasted with a Guinness starting at noon today.

365 days a year, pubs in this country open at noon.

During my three-day stay here, I went to every PUB in the town.

(I heard that three of them closed due to the Corona disaster.)

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to many new people, and one of the friends told me that the families of the PUB owners are all doing well, and I also met some familiar faces.

In the end, I realized that ‘people’ are the most important thing.

Even if that PUB was the gathering spot for all the people we wanted to see, if everyone is well, we will see them again somewhere else, and that’s a good reason to come back.

最果ての街にて。

朝目が覚めても気持ちが晴れないのは、きっと昨夜のウイスキーのせいだけじゃないはずで。

街に大好きなPUBがないってのはこういうことなのか。

こんな気分の時は身体を動かすのがいいってのは経験的になんとなくわかっていたから、突如思い立って車を走らせ、国境を超えて北アイルランドへ向かって2時間30分。

世界遺産のジャイアンツコーズウェイへ。

意外と来たことがなくて、1度は見てみたかった。

火山活動でできた六角形の石柱が整然と並ぶ海岸だ。その昔、アイルランドの巨人が作ったという伝説も。

断崖絶壁のトレイルを散策。(自由に歩けるように初球から上級まで様々なコースが用意されてある。もちろん上級にチャレンジ)

本来高所恐怖症なのと、横殴りの激しい雨風は本気で怖かったけど、歩くこと3時間、

汗だく、ブーツもパンツも泥だらけになって帰って来る頃にはかなり気持ちもクリアーになっていた気がする。

美しい、まるで人間が作ったような石柱の海岸にしばらく佇み、なんとも言えない達成感を感じる。

近くにあるブッシュミルズに立ち寄り、世界最古と言われるウイスキー蒸留所を外から眺め、車を再び走らせる。

街に戻ると、宿に友人が訪ねて来てくれて、しばらくPUBで歓談。

26歳、初めてこの土地を訪れた時に、家にしばらく泊めてくれて、なぜか彼の友人の結婚式にまで参加させてくれたり、アイルランド式ホスピタリティを叩き込んでくれた恩人・エディ。

コロナ禍で色々変わったことはあるけれど、この国の大自然と友人達は、変わらず受け入れてくれた気がした。

目覚めた時に比べたら、だいぶ前向きな気持ちになっていたよ。

Day 6.

Waking up in the morning and not feeling well is certainly not only because of the whiskey I had last night.

I guess this means that there is no pub in town, which I love.

From my experience, physical exercise was the best way to combat this mood, so I decided to drive and cross the border into Northern Ireland for 2 hours and 30 minutes to visit the Giant’s Causeway, a World Heritage Site.

Surprisingly, I had never been here and wanted to see it at least once. The coast is lined with neat rows of hexagonal stone pillars formed by volcanic activity.

It is said that Irish giants created them in the past.

Walking on the steep cliff trail.

There are various courses from beginners to advanced so that you can progress freely.

Of course, I challenged myself to the advanced level.

Height is something I am naturally afraid of, and the heavy rain and wind were very frightening to me.

Even though my boots and pants were sweaty and mud-covered, I felt much better after 3 hours of walking.

Observing the beautiful stone pillars of the beach for a while and feeling an inexhaustible sense of accomplishment.

And then stopped at nearby Bushmills and looked at the world’s oldest whiskey distillery from the outside before driving back.

Upon my return to town, a friend comes to visit me and we chat for a bit in a pub.

Eddie let me stay at his house for a while, and somehow even allowed me to attend his friend’s wedding when I came here for the first time!

The man who installed Irish hospitality in me is him.

Many things have changed since the Corona disaster, but I feel that the great nature of this country and my friends have accepted me as I was.

I am feeling more positive than I did when I woke up.

2日間お世話になったお二人と別れを告げ、一人車を走らせ北上。最終目的地へ。

弘前の次に大好きな街。

本来は心踊るはずなのに、今日はなんだかとってもブルーな気持ちなのである。

理由は、この国まできてレンタカーがオートマティックのTOYOTAだったからではなく(通常マニュアルの外車で気分も盛り上がるんだけど)、

この国に来てまだ1度も晴れていないからでもなく(そんなのここじゃ当たり前)、

この街の会いたかった友人が休暇でスペインにいたからでもなく(前もって伝えずに突然来るのが通例で僕らの流儀になっている。また会えるさ)、

僕の人生に最も大きな影響を与えてくれたPUBがコロナ禍でクローズしてしまったことだ。

先立ってこの街を訪れていたKAZZ君から聞いていたものの、自分の目で明かりが灯っていないPUBを確認し、受け入れがたい悲しみに襲われた。

何度建物の前を歩いても、やっぱり変わらない。

26歳で初めて訪れてから、ずっと僕を受け入れ続けてくれた大切な場所なのだ。

PUBという場所が人口2000人足らずの小さな街でどうやって機能しているか。

PUBにとっての音楽とはどういうものなのか。

地元の若者とお年寄りがどうやって共存しているか。

数十年も同じ場所で継続することがどういうことなのか。

この場所がなければRobbin’s Nestはなかったかもしれない。そのくらい大切な場所だった。

宿にチェックインしても行くべき場所がわからず、とりあえず最寄りのPUBでギネスを注文するけれど、どこか落ち着かない。

数日間滞在予定なので、あらためてコロナがあって、大好きなPUBがクローズして、街がどう変わったか、そこにまだ変わらないものはあるのか。

じっくりと確かめたいなと思う。

Day 5.

After saying good-bye to Yumiko-San and Mark, I headed north towards my final destination.

This tiny town is my second favorite after Hirosaki.

I should be excited, but I’m not feeling well this time.

The reason is not due to Rentcar being a Toyota with an automatic transmission (I generally enjoy driving a manual transmission foreign car).

Nor is it because it has never been sunny in this country, which is very usual.

Not because one of my best friends in town was on vacation in Spain (it’s our custom to show up unannounced…we’ll see you again).

But the pub, which had the biggest impact on my life, was closed due to COVID.

Kazz, who had previously visited the city, had informed me of it, but when I saw it for myself, I was overcome with a sadness that was hard to accept. It was still the same no matter how many times I passed by.

It is a very important place that has accepted me ever since my first visit here when I was 26 years old.

What are the functions of PUB in a small town with a population of less than 2,000?

What is the meaning of music for PUB?

How do young people and elderly people coexist in the area?

What does it mean to remain in one place for decades?

Robbin’s Nest would not have existed without this place.

It was such an important place.

After checking in at the hotel, I was unsure where to go, so I ordered a Guinness at the nearest pub. However, I felt slightly uncomfortable.

Since I plan to stay here for a few days, I would like to check again how the town has changed since COVID and the closed PUB, and if there are still things that have not changed.

このくらいの時期からようやく頭が国外モードに切り替わってくる。

朝夕のリズムや言語脳や文化の差異だったり。

アイルランドの良いところが見えてくると、日本の良いところ、そうでないところも自ずと浮き出てくる。この感覚がとっても大切で、与えられた多角的視点を持ち帰って今後のRobbin’ Nestに反映させる。

きっとこれがカズ君や僕に出来ることの一つ。

スライゴーでの1日。

早朝は海辺まで出かけ散策。

今度は街中へ戻り、色々なお店を回りながら街の人達と触れ合う。(昨日も書いたけど、本当に誰にでも話しかけられるし、みんなとってもウエルカム。(ダブリンみたいな都会にはどんどん人が増えて、こういうのが無くなっているみたい)

素朴でお節介な(いい意味で)人達。

自己分析では意外とシャイで、誰かと関係性を深めるのに比較的時間がかかるんだけど、この国にいるとその感覚も少し変化があり、海外から弘前を訪れてくれる人に、とってもお節介したくなる。笑

中心地から車で20分程。ゆみ子さん、マークの地元のPUBにお邪魔してゆみ子さんがトラッドのレッスンを受けている間、PUBマンのCian(キアン)としばらく交流。

この国ではどんな人達がどんなお酒を飲んで、街の酔っ払い達とどう付き合っているか。笑

このPUBでの2時間が今日のハイライトだったな。僕より20個近く若いキアンの貫禄と懐の深さ。大いに学びたい。

そうだ、料理研究家で書籍もたくさんあるゆみ子さん。(以下参照、是非読んでみてくださいね、お店にも置いてますよ)

以前、アニキ分とこの街を訪れた時に彼女が招待してくれた某日本料理屋さんで、もの凄い鯛焼きが出て来て爆笑(アニキ苦笑い)した経験もあってか、今回セレクトしてくれる食事はどこもとても美味。写真はアフリカンカフェで食べたヤギ肉のカレー。(2600円也 汗)

締めくくりは安定のPUBクロール、気付けば深夜1時。

2人のペースに合わせて飲んでいると、普段あんまりそういうことのない自分も、立ちながら眠ったりする。笑

街の人達とお二人のホスピタリティに包まれる幸せな1日。

Day 4.

It is around this time that my mind finally switches over to the foreign country mode.

The routine of the day and night, the language, cultural differences, and so on.

The positive and negative aspects of Japan become apparent as the positive aspects of Ireland become apparent.

This is very important, and I will bring back the multifaceted viewpoints that I was given and reflect on them in the future at Robbin’s Nest.

I am sure this is one of our tasks in life.

A day in Sligo.

We went for a walk on the beach early in the morning.

Went back to the city and visited various stores, meeting people here. As I wrote yesterday, you are really talked to by anyone and they are very welcoming.

Driving from the center of the city takes about 20 minutes.

We visited Yumiko and Mark’s local pub, and while Yumiko was taking traditional lessons, we had a good chat with Cian, the PUB MAN.

He told us about the details of his work and, of course, how he deals with the drunkards in town!

The two hours in this pub were the highlight of my day.

Cian, who is almost 20 years younger than me, is a gentleman!

I learned a lot from him.

And they took me to some nice places to have great meals.

After finishing the night with a pub crawl, we realized it was 1:00 am.

The town’s hospitality and the two of them made for a happy day.

お世話になったロンドンの友人宅を早朝に出発し一路ヒースロー空港へ。

お馴染みのダブリン空港ではなく、西側の田舎にあるアイルランド・ウエスト空港・ノックへのフライト。今回の旅のハイライトの一つ。

この国まで来て都会を楽しみたいとは思わないので、いつもはダブリンから逃げる様に田舎に走るんだけど、この空港だとその必要もないね。色々と旅はして来たけれど、今までの空港で一番のコンパクトサイズ。

ヒースローから1日1往復しかフライトがないんだけど、それが良いよね。もし飛ばなかったら？それもまた旅。

着陸。

レンタカーをピックして、ずっと会いたかった友人の街、スライゴーへ。

そうそう、この空の色、歓迎の雨、街中に漂うピートの香り、寡黙な羊達、親密な人々。

I feel home。「ただいま」って思わず呟いてしまった。

ゆみ子さん、マーク。

空白の時間はもちろんPUBでのギネスが埋めてくれる。

彼らオススメのレストランと4軒目のPUBでのトラッドセッション。

話は尽きることなく、アイルランド初日は瞬く間に終わる。

ホテルの受付で、PUBで、レストランで、街中で。

誰にでも話しかけられて、歓迎される。そうそう、こんな国だったよな。

違和感なく迎え入れられて、ホスピタリティの国・アイルランドの真髄を初日から堪能した。

I left our friend’s house in London early in the morning and proceeded straight to Heathrow Airport.

This trip is notable because the flight is not to Dublin Airport, but to Ireland West Airport, Knock, located in the countryside to the west.

I usually run to the countryside to escape from Dublin because coming to Ireland is not about enjoying big cities for me, but with this airport, I don’t have to.

I’ve traveled a lot, but this is the most compact airport I’ve ever been to.

The fact that only one round trip flight departs from Heathrow every day is a positive thing.

And if it is cancelled?

That’s the one of highlights of the journey.

I picked up the rental car and headed to Sligo, the city of my friend who I have always missed so much.

The sky’s color, the welcoming rain, the smell of peat in the air around town, the sheep, and the people who are close to you.

I feel home!

The empty time of us is of course filled with a pint of Guinness at the pubs.

The conversation was endless, and the first day in Ireland was over in a flash.

At the hotel reception, pub, restaurant, and on the street.

Everyone welcomes and speaks to you. This is the type of country I remember.

I was welcomed without any sense of discomfort and enjoyed the essence of Ireland, the country’s hospitality, from the very first day.

ぐっすり眠れるかなと思ったら意外と早く目が覚める。やはり1日で時差ボケ調整は厳しいのかな。

友人がいれてくれた熱い紅茶で目を覚まし、近所にあるカフェに朝食へ。

イタリア系の家族が100年以上(1900年から!)経営するそのお店、週末は並ばないと入れないくらいの人気店とのこと。

オーソドックスなイングリッシュブレックファスト。

昨夜のPUBと同じく、隠しきれない時の流れの重みが壁やらテーブルやらに染み込んでる。

触れないでおこうかとも思ったんだけど、それにしても物価が高い。円安も相まって、この朝食、コーヒー付きで3400円。笑

日本経済、大丈夫？

そして今日は1日中ロンドンの街を歩くと決めていたから、所々地下鉄の力を借りながら、それでも歩く、歩く。朝食の高カロリーは5時間のウォーキングで相殺かな。

観光スポットにはさほど興味がないので、街や路地の成り立ちを堪能しながらひたすら歩く。

デビットボウイの某有名アルバムジャケットが撮影された建物をたまたま見つけたり、つい最近見た映画のロケ地をこっそりと確認したり。

昔の自分ならそんなに興味を持てなかっただろう歴史的建築物に惹かれていることも新たな発見だった。

今夜お酒は少し控え目で、明日別れを告げる友人宅で音楽鑑賞、静かな夜を過ごし1日を締めくくる。

Day 2.

I thought I would get a good night’s sleep, but surprisingly I woke up early. It’s tough to adjust to jet lag in one day maybe.

My friend made me a cup of hot English tea, and it completely woke me up and went to a nearby cafe for breakfast.

It has been run by an Italian family for more than 100 years (since 1900!). I was told that it is so popular that you have to wait in line on weekends to get in.

Had a typical English breakfast.

As in the PUB last night, the weight of the passage of time, which cannot be hidden, has seeped into the walls, tables, and other parts of the building.

I thought about not touching them, but then again, prices are way too high than before! This breakfast, including coffee, cost 3,400 yen!

Is the Japanese economy doing okay?

And since I had decided to walk the streets of London all day today, I still walked and walked, with the help of the subway in places. I guess the high calories from breakfast were offset by the 5 hours of walking.

I’m not that interested in the famous sights, so I just walk and walk, while enjoying the city and the alleyways.

I happened to spot the building where David Bowie’s album cover was shot, and I also secretly checked out the location of a movie I had just recently seen.

It was a new discovery for me that I am attracted historical buildings that I would not have been so interested in in the past.

Had a little less beer and spent a quiet evening listening to music at a friend’s house, where I will say goodbye tomorrow, to end the day.
